Beauty Food: Seaweed

October 21, 2012

You know how mystifying Asian women can be when it comes to their flawlessly, ageless skin? Count me lucky as a Chinese Canadian who is constantly mistaken for a 16 year old, when in reality, I am in my mid-20’s. Part of it is luck but I have to say, diet plays an important role for our culture, and it has made a huge contribution in how our skin has managed to evolve and withstand time.  Aside from the low fat diet that we manage t uphold with our home dinners, seaweed consumption is pretty much prevalent to our daily meals.

Seaweed comes in many different types (Green, brown, red) and varieties (Wakame, Nori, Kombu, Dulse). All of these are high in minerals, vitamins and amino acids that are essential for overall vitality as well as skin care. It is rich in anti-oxidants (known to reverse signs of aging) and contains fatty acids to combat skin inflammation.

Seaweed is now present in a lot of skin care products but since they are tasty anyways, why not add it into your daily diet!

Review: OSEA Malibu Eyes and Lips

February 17, 2012

OSEA Malibu Eyes and Lips Moisturizer

OSEA Malibuis a line that I’ve had my eye on for a while because it’s a vegan brand that uses seaweed, one of my favorite foods. Seaweed is not just healthy to eat but it’s great for the skin, it’s jam packed with vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids and antioxidants. Seaweed contains Selenium and ascorbic acid which protects the skin from damaging free radicals and Organic Iodine which increases metabolism. Seaweed is also nutrient dense with essential vitamins such as A1, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, E, K, folic acid, and niacin.

I’d also like to mention that…OSEA was the first company to sign The Compact for Global Production of Safe Health and Beauty Products pledging not to use of toxic chemicals in their beauty products – I love that.

This cream is antioxidant rich cream and contains vegetable-derived amino acid (DPHP) that stimulates collagen production. The rich cream is surprisingly lightweight and not at all greasy. I was initially hesitant to use this moisturizer on my lips but since it’s vegan and safe enough to use on my eyes I figured that I didn’t have too much to worry about. My lips have been a bit drier due to the me keeping our home nice and toasty all winter long. But with just one pump of this moisturizer my lips began to feel velvety smooth. I just had to lick my lips, I mean the product is vegan after all, and there was no nasty chemical taste that you would expect from some moisturizers. Just try placing any drugstore brand on your lips and you will see what I mean.

Overall this was absolutely one of my favorite moisturizers. It’s creamy without being greasy, thick without being pore clogging and the subtle scent is certainly a pleasant surprise compared to the perfume-y drugstore variety of moisturizers. Although the moisturizer is targeted for the eyes and lips you can use it all over your face and that’s what I’ve been doing. OSEA Eyes and Lips is now my go to moisturizer, I’m so glad that I discovered it!
