Beauty Foods: Natural Cures For Dry or Calloused Feet

October 4, 2011

Natural food remedy for dry skin

I can hardly believe that the Summer is over except when I step out the door and I’m hit by a cold gust of wind. Sadness looms over me because before you know it we will all be wearing winter boots and we’ll be knee-deep in snow. With our feet comfortably tucked away in our fleece lined boots we can sometimes forget our most overworked and often overlooked body part, our feet.

With clunky boot season upon us and the cold winter air following closely behind our feet can become dry and even cracked. And we all know that there is nothing attractive about dry or cracked feet. Well over the years I’ve spent my fair share of time getting my feet summer ready with almost every beauty product on the market. Now my mom on the other hand has always a natural cure kind of woman and she often shared her natural beauty tips with me and my sister.

Now when I was in my twenties, I absolutely loved to wear high heels. I’d wear them every single day, to and from work – even though I had to walk thirteen blocks to the train station. Well after a few years of tight shoes and high heels I started to notice that my feet hurt like hell and that I now had a callous on my foot. I immediately went to my local drugstore to see what I could pick up to help my aching feet. But almost every product contain some sort Salicylic Acid to burn away the dead skin *ouch*. I asked my mother for advice and she shared her natural wisdom with me and now I’ll share it with you. There are several natural options for smooth feet, I call them beauty foods because they help to keep us looking beautiful!

Common causes of dry feet or calloused feet:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Wearing shoes that do not fit properly: tight shoes, shoes with narrow pointed toes, high-heeled shoes etc.
  • Sweaty feet can cause blisters
  • Health issues: Diabetes, Obesity, Skin Disorders etc.

Beauty Foods for dry cracked feet:

  • Milk: Soak your feet in a milk bath! Milk contains lactic acid that can help loosen calloused skin.
  • Baking Soda: Mix 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water, massage feet for a few minutes and rinse.
  • Bananas: Apply the pulp of ripe banana on the affected area of your feet. Let the banana sit for 10 minutes and then wash with warm water.
  • Chamomile Tea: Dilute and soak your feet in chamomile tea, the tea may temporarily stain your feet but easily washes off with soap and water.
  • Epsom Salt: Soak feet in warm water with Epsom Salts for 15-20 minutes.

The best solution for dry or cracked feet is to find the cure, which can be anything from the shoes that you wear to a medical condition. If you’re unsure of the cause of your foot discomfort it’s best to see your doctor. If shoes are the cause of your foot problems then switching to another pair with better arch support could do the trick.

I’m also a huge believer in taking vitamin supplements. There are several vitamins that are beneficial to the health of  your skin. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Vitamin E fights against free radical damage and helps to ease dryness and itchy skin.
  • Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen, it also helps maintain circulation and proper moisture.
  • Vitamin A or rather lack of this essential vitamin leads to dry skin. Topical Vitamin A, commonly known as Retinol has been shown to decrease signs of dryness and aging.

Even if you don’t have cracked feet try any of these natural remedies for soft and sexy feet! What natural remedies do you use in your beauty routine?

Natural Beauty Tips that you can try at home

March 20, 2010

natural beauty

I love beauty and self-improvement is every form and I believe that “natural” beauty is just as fun and important as any of my favorite beauty luxuries. Here are a few home beauty tips and treatments that I’ve picked up along the years. I hope that you find them useful.

My Top 10 Natural Beauty Remedies

1. Dark circles under your eyes? Cut a slice of Potato and place under your eye for 10-15 minutes. Potatoes contain an enzyme called Catecholase which naturally lightens skin.

2. Stained nails from using dark polish? Soak your nails in lemon juice. Lemon is an astringent and will remove the stains.

3. Have apple cider vinegar in your home? It can be used to treat dandruff as well as oily skin (50% apple cider vinegar & 50% water)

4. Dry Skin? Take a milk bath; milk contains lactic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid known to shed dead skin cells. Add 2-4 cups to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes and rinse.

5. Sometimes you may get a blemish or two and you don’t have any acne treatment on hand, try honey. Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and it kills the bacterium that causes acne. Dab on a small amount on the affected area and rinse off after 10 minutes.

6. You wanna get your dry winter heels ready for the summer? Mash a ripe banana and spread the pulp on your heels, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse.

7. Dry lips? After brushing your teeth, brush your lips! This will help exfoliate them and wisk away the dry skin, then apply Petroleum Jelly or vitamin E oil or your favorite lip balm.

8. If you use a lot of product on your hair, you may want to add baking soda to your shampoo. This will turn your shampoo into a clarifying shampoo that will help remove the buildup.

9. If your nails are weak and break easily, you may want to soak them in olive oil for 5 minutes every night.

10. If your lips are dry and cracked, try rubbing cucumbers on them, it will help heal your lips.
