Beat the mirror: try these makeup tips

July 17, 2015

Beauty-tips

Where there’s a mirror, there’s a face feeling inferior. You’ll wake up, shuffle to the bathroom and catch a glance in that glass before you’ve even had the chance to wash your rough visage.

Sagging skin, darkened eyes and hair with about as much volume as broken speakers – style isn’t a word people would readily associate with you.

Because good health and well-applied makeup is all part of the fashion game. Just imagine if Cara Delevingne couldn’t apply her eyebrows properly – we’d be living in a world of chaos.

So what products can you use to match your style aspirations with cosmetic quality?

Crème de la crème

So many people have hair that major high street shampoos can’t (or won’t) cater to. Instead of leaving frizzy hair tamed, some shampoos leave them worse than when they started.

That’s why you’ve got to take your hair into your hands, with a product like Wen styling crème.

Available from Wen’s website, this crème is rubbed onto hair after rinsing it of conditioner. Once it’s set, you’ll enjoy follicles that are shiny and frizz-free.

While most products imply they’ve got some kind of miraculous quality, this crème really can tame even the frizziest of manes. Give it a go.

Luscious Lush

Lush has been trading ethical soaps for well over a decade, taking on places like the Body Shop and beating them at their own game.

Hundreds of products are available from the store chain, and almost all do their best to contain natural ingredients. Animal testing is proudly eschewed, farmers are paid fairly and no one in the top bracket of leadership is paid an extravagant amount.

The company even won the Observer Moral Company of the Year award. While you won’t directly feel more fashionable when you use their products, you will have a keen sense of the ethical advantages your purchase has made.

Turmeric

You might have used turmeric as an ingredient in your meals. But did you know it has a brilliant application in style?

Used in India for centuries, turmeric can be great for brightening and evening out the complexion, providing you with an excellent base before you apply any other makeup.

Moreover, this fantastic concoction is jam-packed with antioxidants, fighting free radicals and making your skin far healthier.

In terms of natural ways to help your skin, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Got any more fashionable ways to improve your hair or skin? Then let us know!

Postworkout Beauty Tips: On the Go

July 16, 2013

postworkout sweat

I admit it. There are days where I would care less about how I look as I dash off to my next destination looking like a sweaty pig. For someone who doesn’t drive, this is how I would look when I’m on the bus, at supermarket and embarrassingly enough when meeting a best friend. This best friend finally shook me to my senses and told me that I looked like (insert expletive). I was horribly embarrassed but I recovered and since then I’m pretty much put together after a grueling workout. I know ladies, its hard to care about how we look after we’ve had a tiring workout sesh, and all we wanna do is go home, crawl into our beds and sleep our way through. But what about days where you simply have to run an errand? Even rush off to work? How can we save time in between to make sure we look our very best? Here are some tips I’ve learned and really worked for me. Not only do I feel great after a hard workout, but I can seriously look good too.

1. Dry shampoo. Short on time and can’t shower? Dry shampoo work like magic! It takes away the oils on your hairline that you usually get after a workout. Just sprinkle (or spritz) your dry shampoo on your hairline, flip your head upside down and massage your way through clean hair (don’t forget to hair dry for volume, especially those with short hair)

2. Buns buns buns. Not the pastry kind, but of the hair. Secure tightly with bobby pins. Simple but effective.

3. Go au naturel. Who needs blush? Seriously, you don’t need foundation or blush when you’ve got a natural glow post-workout going on. Just wash your to get excess dirt or sweat off the cheeks then you’re good to go.

4. Don’t forget your deodorant.Try baby powder to keep you dry and smelling fresh!

These minute-saving tips will have to ready and out the gym in no time. Take some time and pride in yourself. You’ve worked hard to look good, so go at it 100%!

Beauty and Health Tips I learned at the Fitness Magazine Blogger Meet and Tweet!

May 10, 2012

Fitness Magazine Blogger Meet and Tweet sign

If you follow me on Twitter, @LipstickNYC, then you may have read a few of my #FitBlogNYC tweets and maybe even wondered what the hashtag was all about. Well yesterday I attended a Meet and Tweet event hosted by Fitness Magazine where bloggers were able to sit in on panels like The Real Deal on Carbs, Cleanses and Caffeine, Gym to Street: Fashion Tips That Will Help You Stretch Your Spandex Beyond the Gym and Easy Beauty Secrets: Q&A with FITNESS Beauty Director and Laura Geller.

The event was incredibly fun and we were able to meet and chat with brands Like Vichy, Pure Protein, Oakley and Birkenstock. Each brand had a table set up so the bloggers could speak with brands about new products, health tips and of course answer any questions that we had. We even got to meet Olympic soccer player, Mia Hamm.

At noon we were treated to a very healthy lunch which I need because I’ve been cheating on my diet with sweets. See totally healthy!

On a side not Laura Geller was absolutely charming and hilarious. She shared so many great beauty tips and even suggested some purchases that were not her own brand. Laura Geller was so honest and funny, a true class act!

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

February 22, 2011

makeup brushes

Regularly cleaning your makeup brushes is key to healthy skin and a smooth makeup application. Makeup brushes can harbor bacteria and dirt which can lead to breakouts. Makeup brushes also absorb body oils and dead skin cells so they need to be cleaned to preserve the life of the brushes. It is generally recommended that makeup brushes be cleaned after each use, this can be as simple as wiping the brush hairs with a baby wipe. On a weekly basis (especially if you use your tools daily, you should wash them), now while there are many cleaners on the market here’s how to clean your makeup brushes.

  1. Gather all of your used makeup brushes, a clean towel and baby shampoo
  2. Turn on the faucet and allow the water to reach a lukewarm temperature. Run the bristles of the brush under the flowing water. (You may start to see the makeup tinted water.)
  3. Now apply a small amount (a drop or two) of shampoo into the palm of your hand and gently massage the bristles in your palm.
  4. Rinse the bristles until the water runs clear.
  5. Gently squeeze the water out of the brushed from base to tip, lay the brush down on a flat surface and reshape it. (Do not ever use a hair dryer to dry your brushes!)

Lastly do not boil, microwave or use conditioner on your brushes, that will damage them. It’s also best not to dry your brushes in an upright position because the water can seep into the base and loosen the glue that keeps the bristles in place.

So I’m curious, how do you keep your brushes clean?

Natural Beauty Tips that you can try at home

March 20, 2010

natural beauty

I love beauty and self-improvement is every form and I believe that “natural” beauty is just as fun and important as any of my favorite beauty luxuries. Here are a few home beauty tips and treatments that I’ve picked up along the years. I hope that you find them useful.

My Top 10 Natural Beauty Remedies

1. Dark circles under your eyes? Cut a slice of Potato and place under your eye for 10-15 minutes. Potatoes contain an enzyme called Catecholase which naturally lightens skin.

2. Stained nails from using dark polish? Soak your nails in lemon juice. Lemon is an astringent and will remove the stains.

3. Have apple cider vinegar in your home? It can be used to treat dandruff as well as oily skin (50% apple cider vinegar & 50% water)

4. Dry Skin? Take a milk bath; milk contains lactic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid known to shed dead skin cells. Add 2-4 cups to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes and rinse.

5. Sometimes you may get a blemish or two and you don’t have any acne treatment on hand, try honey. Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and it kills the bacterium that causes acne. Dab on a small amount on the affected area and rinse off after 10 minutes.

6. You wanna get your dry winter heels ready for the summer? Mash a ripe banana and spread the pulp on your heels, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse.

7. Dry lips? After brushing your teeth, brush your lips! This will help exfoliate them and wisk away the dry skin, then apply Petroleum Jelly or vitamin E oil or your favorite lip balm.

8. If you use a lot of product on your hair, you may want to add baking soda to your shampoo. This will turn your shampoo into a clarifying shampoo that will help remove the buildup.

9. If your nails are weak and break easily, you may want to soak them in olive oil for 5 minutes every night.

10. If your lips are dry and cracked, try rubbing cucumbers on them, it will help heal your lips.

More of my favorite natural beauty tips to come…
