Yes, we’ve been there. We’re at the make up counter, and an intimidating amount of lipstick shades are being presented to you, you don’t know where to start. Once you’ve got into the groove of trying on say 5-6 shades, you give up and buy the one that really doesn’t go well with your face at all. I’ve been there multiple times. I peruse through lipsticks too quickly, and try on ridiculous colors and eventually end up buying a color (which I do out of guilt of trying on everything) that I rarely use. Lesson learned, even in beauty, one must do their research.
So here it is, a guide for those of you who are shopping for a new shade without feeling overwhelmed by the array of colors presented before you. I have narrowed down colors that are generally suited for each skin tones, and luckily most lines are organized according to spectrum of each shades for those of you who want to keep it simple (or in a rush), stick to these shades and you are good to go! For those with Pale Skin ( think Dita Von Teese): RED. I cannot re-iterate how effective the color red can brighten up your look. Classic, sultry and bold. Try the classic M.A.C Lipstick in Russian Red.
For those with Olive Skin (think Jessica Szohr): Bright Berry. Think dark pinks and brown-reds, maroon colors for those of you with olive skin. Try tarte LipSurgence in Lively ($24).
For those with Asian Skin (think Lucy Liu): Light Pinks or Soft Fuchsia. Soft tones but still sexy when you pair it with lip gloss. My personal favorite is Lancome’s Rouge in Love Line in Corail in Love. It’s peachy pink, and it’s great for daytime wear.
For those with Dark Skin (think Viola Davis): Bright Colors or Deep Rich Colors. Talk about two different extremes, but those with dark skin tones can pull both looks off! If you’re feeling feisty, try a bright orange-red shade Revlon Moon Drops Creme Lipstick in Hot Coral or a deep wine color like Dior in Fantastic Plum.
Just remember, lipstick is just another role, another facet of your whole facial beauty. So consider the look you are going for before you consider a certain shade. This guide is just a way to help you narrow down looks when you are new to the whole lipstick game. But once you’ve got a taste of what you are going for, definitely branch out and experiment!
