Noted Boston dermatologist, Dr. Ranella Hirsch shares her skin care tips for every age. Due to a variety of internal and external factors, your skin goes through many changes throughout the decades. Here, Dr. Ranella Hirsch, board certified dermatologist, explains the best skincare steps you should be taking in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.
Your lovely 20’s:
Although skin is in its prime during your twenties, this age range begins noticing wrinkles related to facial motions. These “smile lines” begin to form primarily around the eyes and mouth. Dr. Hirsch suggests taking preventative measures against early wrinkles by judiciously applying sunscreen (yes, even during the winter). Look for skincare products containing antioxidants like Vitamin C or E to maintain a radiant complexion.
The Dirty 30’s:
During your thirties, you’re bound to experience a lot of lifestyle changes including marriage, pregnancy and even career moves. These physical and emotional life stressors can take a serious toll on your skin, causing breakouts and pigmentation changes, says Dr. Hirsch. You may also start to see fine lines, try using a Retinol product at night and a broad-spectrum sunscreen when you’re outside.
Your Fabulous 40’s:
Once you enter your forties, cumulative effects of aging become more apparent as wrinkles deepen. Also, sun damage in the form of unwanted pigmentation can appear. It’s best to handle this with a combination of prevention: use a broad spectrum sunscreen and a nighttime application of active ingredients to combat the damage you already have.
The Fierce 50’s:
Throughout the fifties and beyond, the effects of menopause take a toll on your skin, resulting in drooping and sagging skin. For some, surgery may be the best option, says Dr. Hirsch.
