5 Wearable Late-Spring Green Shadows, Pigments and Polish

April 22, 2011

It’s only two days until Easter, and store shelves are brimming with an abundance of green things. Mother Nature has a lot of green going on, too, as skittish plants and flowers finally make an appearance after a long, dreary winter. (Crocuses, I don’t blame you- I’d have stayed underground until mid-April too, if I didn’t need to replenish my eyeliner stocks.)

Green is one of those shades that may seem a bit scary and potentially unflattering in the pan, but many shades of the color really do complement all skin tones. Whether you have brown, blue or green eyes, the hue has a magical ability to look amazing on anyone. That’s not to say greens are foolproof- it’s a fine line between “fresh, springy look” and “extra on the set of Wicked.” Here are five vibrant but wearable greens for every skin tone.

1.) Sephora by OPI in Gleek Out: An amendment to the “not foolproof” rule is fingernails, which are relatively easy to rock in any color for anyone, ever. Sephora by OPI’s limited edition green in honor of Glee makes up for not being minty-green with a wealth of subtle gold shimmer. It’s not “Ballet Slippers” or “Fiji,” but as far as green polishes go, it’s very demure and feminine.

2.) Urban Decay Eyeshadow in URB: My very first makeup gig was freelancing for Urban Decay at the Sephora in Times Square, and I quickly discovered how universally flattering this shade could be. Ethereal paired with pink lips and cheeks and bold and retro with a red lip, Urban Decay’s URB couples well with basic neutral shimmers and looks fantastic set off with a thin touch of sharp black liner.

3.) Shiro Cosmetics Loose Vegan Eyeshadow in Acid: Indie makeup brands are a little controversial in the beauty blogosphere- some cosmetic junkies swear by their favorite little Etsy shop, while others are only into product that comes from a coast-to-coast name brand shop like Sephora or Bloomie’s. I’ve found most indie beauty sellers fantastic to deal with, and the minor variations and customized nature of some of the products can be huge selling points. Shiro Cosmetics’ Acid pigment is loose, so it’s more suited for an all over green look. This little pot of pure color and the “Series of Tubes” (win!) gloss-stain hybrids are on my buy-very-soon list.

4.) MAC Eyeshadow in Swimming: Another assertive shimmer shade, MAC’s Swimming is hugely popular among the brand’s artists as well as their fanbase for its strong pigmentation but not-overwhelming hue. A little tiny pop of Swimming with Dubonnet and clear Lipglass is one of my favorite more intense night looks.

5.) NARS Liner in Patmos: If you’d like a tiny hint of green but not a full on shimmery eye extravaganza, NARS’ Patmos liner, described as a “khaki” green, is subtle enough to work for a conservative office environment while still lending that not-entirely-neutral green mojo. This eminently wearable shade is excellent for redheads.

Do you have a favorite grassy green color for warm weather? What’s your go-to green strategy?

Six De-Stressing Spa Products for Bath, Body and Face

April 14, 2011

April is National Stress Awareness Month. Maybe it’s got something to do with Tax Day, with everyone scrambling to find last minute forms or documents. Or maybe it’s the sometimes-gloomy, rainy weather that often persists throughout the month. Lots of spa junkies find that the best way to de-stress when you can’t get out for a facial or massage includes some home-spa pampering. If that’s your favorite form of stress release, here are six products that soothe and calm.

1.) Jurlique Rebalancing Sensitivity Kit: Although this is more of an everyday mini-regime, Jurlique’s Rebalancing Sensitivity Kit is incredibly well-suited to the purposes of relaxation. The four piece kit contains a half ounce each of Soothing Foaming Cleanser, Chamomile Soothing Mist, Soothing Herbal Recovery Gel, and Soothing Day Care Lotion, and it’s perfect for a home facial.

2.) Mario Badescu Azulene Calming Mask: Cult-favorite skincare line Mario Badescu’s Azulene Calming Mask is soothing both esthetically as a product and physically on your skin. Seamolliant is calming and moisture-binding (as well as really rich in skin-healing minerals), and Azulene and Balsam Peru have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing redness and balancing skin tone.

3.) REN Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream: If you’re heading out after your stress-relief spa routine, a good anti-damage moisturizer will protect all your hard work. REN’s Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream has Omega 3 and 7 to repair skin, and Calendula to calm. There’s also a proprietary “Global Protection Complex,” with ingredients to fight free radical damage.

4.) DermaDoctor Calm, Cool & Corrected: Fairer skinned types are more likely to be afflicted with rosacea during periods of stress or exposure to the elements. (Or even a long night of mojitos.) DermaDoctor’s Calm, Cool & Corrected battles the spectrum of rosacea symptoms (like excess oil, redness and broken capillaries) while also working to correct signs of aging. Squalene and dimethicone keep skin hydrated, and chamomile and aloe calm.

5.) BambuEarth Chocolate Truffle Organic Whipped Shea & Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Cream: One of the super-greatest things about the internet is the abundance of amazing indie beauty product makers that will ship their carefully crafted wares straight to your door. Etsy is a huge beauty marketplace, and BambuEarth’s Chocolate Truffle Organic Whipped Shea & Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Cream is one of the nicer choco-spa options. “Foodie” scents are not for everyone (although I will personally cop to being a lifelong Angel wearer and chocolate body butter addict), but refined and beautifully packaged options like this one are delightful if you’re a fan.

6.) Sonoma Lavender Pastel Paisley Spa Mask: An on-call esthetician to give pressure-relieving facial massages when needed would be a great thing to have, but in a pinch, the Sonoma Lavender Pastel Paisley Spa Mask is a pretty substitute. Microwave the mask for warmth and to release the lavender fragrance. It also makes a pretty design element on your vanity table.

How do you unwind at home with beauty products? Are there any you reach for after a rough, long or taxing day?

Stylish Staples for Springtime Showers

February 8, 2011

I’ll admit that as a blogger, I no longer have to slog through the elements in New York City. (Don’t be mad at me!) But I clearly remember the many springs I spent thrilled it was no longer icy and freezing, but still contending with sheets of rain and gusts of wind. Plus, I have bangs. Middle parted girls can deal with showers a bit more gracefully, but for girls with a “fringe,” spring is that much more volatile.

Despite being an avid shopper (and spring baby), the season always snuck up on me unprepared. So if I were braving the elements again, here are five items I’d love in my arsenal of springtime gear.

1.) A practical but pretty trench: For some reason, I only just recently learned that something called a “hooded trench” exists. This is on par with finding tinted balms or conditioning styling crème. This option by Hawke is practical, with both the aforementioned hood and a removable liner (genius!) But if you want something a bit more girly and in spring chosen color purple, Ruche has this adorable, deeply hued option by Tulle that’s fully lined in plaid. (And a steal at $72.99)

2.) An aggressively pink lip gloss: It’s that time of winter where all you can think about is flowers, pastels and supremely pink lips, and this Trish McEvoy lipgloss with SPF 15, I think, may have inspired a Lil’ Mama song.

3.) A cloche to avoid wet hair: Cloches are timeless, but also sport a low brim to keep bangs dry. This one has a sturdy felt bow, with a matching, cheery lining.

4.) Boots!: Okay, everyone and their mom wore Hunter boots this winter, but it also seemed that that Mini Cooper shade of green was the main hue of choice. This lively, matte pink version is knee-high and springier than a bunny carrying a bunch of daffodils on the Vernal Equinox. (Also, did you know they make cozy matching but contrasting liners?)

5.) A sweet pendant: Another symbol of spring is adorable baby animals, and this delicate but noticeable silver fawn necklace is sweet and whimsical- perfect to brighten up a gray and kind of glum day.

6.) A coated canvas purse to keep tech toys dry: Coated canvas bags always have a bit of an air of usefulness to them, but if you’ve ever killed a cell phone by failing to screw a water bottle cap on all the way, you probably still panic a bit about your iPhone when you’re walking to the subway in a typhoon. Brooklyn Industries always has a selection of coated canvas totes that are well made and capacious, and this black and gray damask tote with a magenta lining is adorable and water resistant.

What are you looking forward to wearing when you put away your winter gear? Which spring trends are you totally feeling?
