Extending Your Haircolor, Part Two: Stalling Salon Visits

June 9, 2011

Earlier this week, we posted about best practices for coloring your hair at home and extending your haircolor. Getting to the salon, as stated, sometimes is just impossible. Things come up, excellent stylists book up- and if you, like me, have some super-premature gray hair, those in-between periods can be nearly unbearable. (It doesn’t help when your best friend points out that she didn’t realize how peppery your roots are.) Even coloring at home can be a commitment- I’ve been doing it for the better part of two decades and I still manage to touch up the sink, part of the wall and all my towels.

Whether you color at home, in a salon or have a personal stylist who touches up your roots poolside while you sip Dom Perignon, sometimes it causes less damage and work when you can color less frequently. Here are some ways to put off the task of coloring your hair a bit longer- although, very few beauty thrills are as potent as freshly tinted locks.

Color depositing shampoos: These aren’t going to dramatically change your hair hue, but they will go some way in staving off a stint in the salon chair. For me, it’s Aveda’s Black Malva. Options are available for every shade, but you might want to try a smaller size or keep the receipt when beta-ing a new product- I learned this the hard way when a British henna formula turned my black hair an unfetching eggplant color.

Wash it less: My friend Amy has the most amazing hair- and frustratingly, when you ask her what her secret is, she says it’s washing it infrequently. Finer haired girls can’t quite get away with such shenanigans, but my hair is the finest texture ever, and even I can go two showers without washing if I touch it up with heat.

A dry shampoo like Fekkai’s Au Naturel will freshen and perk up post-shower cap hair, and Bumble and Bumble’s Hair Powders come in a range of shades to boost color when removing unwanted shine. And one thing I have noticed is integral for this task is a decent shower cap. Any large one with a tight band is sufficient, but there are some cute fancy versions like Dry Divas that could make not shampooing a bit more palatable. (And adorable.) The fewer washes your hair is subject to, the longer color will last.

Be prepared: Inevitably, there will be times when your roots feel so obvious right before a proper touch-up. Luckily, there are some last-ditch options til your stylist makes space for you. Rita Hazan’s Root Concealer helps hide grays and demarcation, and Oscar Blandi’s Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up & Highlighting Pen comes in a wealth of shades to match hair accurately.

Do you have any tips or tricks for the awkward period just before you recolor?

Five Fixes for an Instant Good Hair Day

March 29, 2011

An awesome blow-dry or thorough session with a flat iron takes serious time, and most people don’t have a personal stylist on call. Early mornings and missed alarms happen, but it doesn’t mean an updo is your only option. If you need to eek another day out of your blowout, or you just noticed your roots could do with a touch up the morning of a big meeting, here are five hair fixes to buy time until you get back in the stylist’s chair.

1.) Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder (various colors available): Total multi-tasker. Unlike most dry shampoos, Bumble’s Hair Powder comes in several shades (black, red, platinum, blonde and brunette.) Particularly handy for dark-haired girls or redheads, who may have issues with other oil absorbing hair products creating a powdery effect on their brightly-hued hair.

2.) Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It: If you’re hair is fine-bodied, making a style last can be a bit of a challenge. Unlike very thick hair, it will lose shape and become lackluster more quickly, which always feels so unfair. This Mattifying Powder not only removes traces of oil, but perks up roots, so fine hair isn’t weighed down and tired-looking.

3.) Your Face Powder: My best friend swears by his bronzing powder as a stand in root-hiding trick. A dedicated dry-clean product has a soapier scent and better overall application, but sometimes you notice your hair is flagging right before a night out or when you arrive at work. He taps excess off a big brush and delicately touches a bit of powder around the hairline, which should grab you a few hours until you can restyle.

4.) Jonathan Product Green Rootine Dry Shampoo Brush On Hair Powder: The face powder method is like an ad-hoc version of Jonathan Product’s Green Rootine Hair Powder. Very few people have matching hair and skin, and this product comes colors to better blend with your locks. But the brush-on style prevents sticky hands and allows for a lot of precision in applying to hair. And the packaging is incredibly purse or laptop-bag friendly, making it the best choice for on-the-go touchups.

5.) Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Spray: If you’re unsure about dry shampoos or need a spare to keep at your desk, the budget-friendly Suave option costs less than a latte and is available at 24-hour drugstores for real hair emergencies. It lacks the color enhancing perks of pricier options, but is a great option in a pinch.

Do you have any five-minute hair tricks? Are there any products that always manage to rescue your awesome blowout?

Growing Out Bangs? Four Ways to a Faster, Less Painful Transition

March 15, 2011

Growing out bangs is doubtlessly one of the most traumatic hair experiences known to man or woman. Confession: I’ve been sporting blunt bangs for the better part of three decades. Hair is supposed to be about experimentation, and heaven knows I’ve tried, so hard! I’ve enlisted the help of top stylists, side-swept bang favoring friends, train cases full of bobby pins… I never make it past the uncomfortable in-between stage.

However, last week I uncovered a semi-recent picture of Christina Aguilera that fueled my fringe-shedding lust anew. Emboldened by this image, I did a bit more research into the process of growing out bangs and experienced hope for the first time that maybe I too could experience a bangs-free existence. Here are four ways to rid yourself of bangs that minimize awkwardness and even enhance the midpoint.

1.) Pretend they’re not there. While the pic of Xtina below features layering at the edge of the bang, the style is largely dependent on the hair being treated as if there are no bangs. This runs counter to what my bangless and sidebangs friends have told me about styling the lengthier fringe over one eye, which is hard to wear for some people. Styling bangs straight down the middle and off the face is a good option once they’re at nose-level.

2.) Pretend they’re not there, part two. When bangs are too short to style loose, backcombing hair and blending them in is an easy fix. This look is ideal with an updo, but can be used when hair is down, as seen below on Reese Witherspoon. Bumble and Bumble’s Styling Creme will make hair behave, but isn’t too heavy for the bang area.

3.) Twist and pin. This look, as seen on Sandra Bullock, is a bit limiting for every day because of its distinctiveness, but it has a very intentional feel to it, as if you meant to have cheekbone length fringe. Pick your part, and comb hair back toward your ears on each side. Pin just before the edge, and arrange longer front pieces to cover hair ends. Pin again to keep the longer strands in place, if desired. If you are into hair accessories, this is a great way to show off some fancy, vintage-style barrettes.

4.) Dramatic side part. Similar to twisting and pinning, parting hair dramatically and pinning them to the side is a bit less impactful and easier to wear a few days in a row. Take a teensy, tiny bit of a wax like Kiehl’s Creative Cream Wax and put half of it back. Seriously, minuscule. Warm it in your fingertips and gently coax the styled part to the side. Work the remainder into the ends of your hair before you’re tempted to mess with it any more. Kristen Bell’s one-pin style above epitomizes this look.

Have you survived growing out bangs? Do you have any tips to ease the growing-out stage?

Fashion Week Beauty: Five Hair and Makeup Trends From the Runway

February 17, 2011

Hair and makeup are undeniably important at Fashion Week, and while not forgotten, they can still take a bit of a backseat to the many fabulous clothing trends that debut during the fashion frenzy. If you’re a cosmetics junkie, you probably devour the makeup looks just as hard or harder as the fancy frocks on the catwalk. Here are five Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 makeup trends that we spotted!

1.) Paler, Matte-r Skin: As seen in this pic from MAC Cosmetics (and in several other places), skin for F/W 2011 is trending towards dropping the bronzer in favor of more natural, almond-y tones for fairer skin types. A bronzed glow is a bit of a perennial, but it was interesting to see the more alabaster types get their day- well, not in the sun, apparently. MAC’s Studio Fix is a very favored product for a perfected matte visage.

2.) Gunmetal and black: Lots of shows featured an Old Hollywood vibe, and gunmetal has a modern edge but undeniable silent film-era feel as well. (Seen on eyes in Badgley Mischka’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection.) Dior’s 1-Colour Ultra-Smoothing High Impact Eyeshadow in Argentic 056 or Flash Back 086 provides a finely-milled shimmery gray wash of color.

3.) Undone Updos: Are you one of those people who can get days out of a good blowout? Looks for Fall and Winter 2011 will put far less of a strain on your hot tools, as bed-head inspired updos totally rocked the runway this Fashion Week- as seen below at Vivienne Tam. A dab of Bumble & Bumble’s Brilliantine is a standby for this fashionably disheveled look.

4.) Neutral lips: A twist on the Hollywood siren look was a neutral lip in lieu of the old glam standard red. Make Up Forever did the look at Mara Hoffman below, and Rouge Artist Intense in Matte Caramel is a good neutral choice for an understated lip.

5.) Intense, winged liner: We hinted at this trend in our post about Mehron for Toni Francesc, but this is a look that popped up in several F/W 2011 collections and is seen below at Monique Lhuillier. NARS has a felt tip precision liquid eyeliner that would make this look a snap, even without pre-existing liquid liner skills.
