Review: bareMinerals Naturally Luminous Renew & Reveal Facial Cleanser

September 30, 2011

bareMinerals Naturally Luminous Renew & Reveal Facial Cleanser

If you’re plagued with oily skin you’ve no doubt tried many facial cleansers over the years. From my experience most cleansers for oily skin fall into one of two categories, cleansers that do not wash all the oil away, and cleansers that completely strip all of the moisture from my skin. I’ve had the Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Skincare Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser in my beauty cabinet for a few weeks. And since my beauty product collection has grown considerably it was now or never to give it a test drive.

This Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser is a bit different from other cleansers, it’s a water-activated powder. To activate the cleanser simply pour a small amount into wet hands and rub together to produce a light lather.

This particular cleanser is part of the RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex line that is 100% pure. These “active” minerals help with cell renewal and provide antioxidant protection for maximum skin renewing benefits.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this cleanser cleaned my skin, there was no irritation and my skin somehow managed to feel squeaky clean without feeling dried out. It took a few washes to get used to mixing my own cleanser but it’s very effective at removing makeup while leaving skin exfoliated and refreshed. As someone with sensitive skin redness is always a concern when trying new products and I did not experience any irritation at all. This cleanser provided excellent exfoliation without the use of harsh abrasive substances or harsh chemicals. The key exfoliating ingredient in this product is the RareMineral ActiveSoil Complex which has been shown to improve texture and make pores less noticeable. Overall I was extremely impressed with the results, this is a holy grail item for sure!

Bandaid Beauty: Five Fix-it Potions for Makeup Perfection

April 8, 2011

Imperfections is a pretty loaded beauty word- Kevyn Aucoin’s work has remained inspirational due to his focus of embracing and enhancing natural variation. However, there are a few things it’s pretty much impossible to work with- larger pores, flaky uneven skin or dark circles can create a challenge when you just want a dewy, au naturel look. Luckily, there are a few potions that target those cosmetic roadblocks without necessitating a pan-cake makeup spackled face. Here are five beauty fixes to unobtrusively correct minor skin issues:

1.) Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum: This won’t spot-cover your skin, but it’s a treatment product that will overall improve the way your makeup goes on. Containing something called a “Pore Resurfacing Complex,” Clinique’s Pore Refining Solution Correcting Serum chemically exfoliates skin and claims to empty pores of debris. Users report pretty instantaneous results, and regular use will lead to an overall smoother complexion.

2.) Benefit Dr. Feelgood: Need a more instant solution? Benefit’s Dr. Feelgood is described as a “velvety complexion balm.” Applying it before makeup will not only keep your base in place, but also prevents concealer and foundation from settling into pores, fine lines, or areas of dryness. The cute little tin is portable for touch ups, too.

3.) bareMinerals Prime Time Brightening Foundation Primer: Mineral makeup has a devoted and evangelistic fan base, something you probably know if you’ve ever a) used it or b) complimented a mineral makeup user on their flawless complexion. Mineral makeup is good for skin and offers superior sun protection, but doesn’t always go on as easily and evenly as its cream and liquid cousins. bareMinerals foundation primer makes mineral application more smoothly, keeps the finely-milled powders from settling in fine lines and increases time in between touch-ups.

4.) By Terry Or De Rose Elixir Supreme, Pink Gold: My first introduction to By Terry was the fantastic and well loved Baume De Rose, but was quickly seduced by the amazing, cult favorite Light Expert as well. Or De Rose is another fantastic By Terry option for skin perfection, plumping and mattifying skin with a slight, warm neutral tint.

5.) Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base: First things first, this is one of those products that would look totally cute on a vanity. But the packaging alone is not the only selling point to Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base. Vitamin C and E protect against environmental damage, and Vitamin A exfoliates skin over time, facilitating smooth application of makeup and product.

Tips and tricks for skin correction abound throughout the internet- do you have a favorite secret weapon for amazing skin?

Foiled again with bareMinerals!

Bare Minerals Foiled Eye Tutorial

While at my favorite makeup store I saw a kit by bareMinerals and decided to try it out. As I’m sure you’re aware of by now, I’m a little OCD about palettes and kits because their just easy and included everything you need. I snapped up this little gem on my way to the register so I really didn’t even look at it to see what was included in it. But since it was a kit I figured that it would have all that I needed for a new look. On the cover the kit reads: “Learn the lessons they didn’t teach you in school. Tutorials: Foiled Eye”

On the inside flap of the kit is the “tutorial” or  rather instructions on how and where to apply the shadow. I was kind of hoping for something a little more in depth. Take a look:

The kit includes two mineral shadows and a double-ended brush.

The two shades are Night Owl and Disco Glimmer – cute names huh? Night Owl is a translucent steel amethyst shade and Disco Glimmer is a lilac pearl shade. Both shades can be worn wet or dry depending on the effect that you are looking to achieve.

The shadows are pretty pigmented dry on skin, here are the swatches:

I love these shades for the evening, I don’t know if I would wear them during the day. I also found the loose shadows a bit messy so it’s going to take me a while to get used to using them.

Overall the kit was worth the price because it includes two shadows and a double sided eye shadow brush.

The foiled eye kit retails at $32 and can be purchased at Sephora.
