I’m one of the few people that has never tried dry shampoo. Maybe it because in my younger years I was told to use baby powder as an alternative to washing my hair and I was left with a big mess and white roots. Not a very pretty picture! However recently my curiosity was peaked when I began noticing dry shampoo in Sephora. So being the daring diva that I am I decided to see if this product was something that could make my beauty routine easier.

Klorane has created a dry shampoo that is not only eco-friendly but also gentle to your hair. Some of the key ingredients are:

Oat extract – to soothe and calm the scalp

Corn and rice starch – for powerful cleansing

Cylcodextrins – natural absorbent microspheres to rid hair of excess dirt.

The product is very simple to use: simple squeeze the bottle (see below) and a gentle, airy mist flows out. I applied the spray to my roots (as directed), waited a few minutes and brushed it out.

I was a bit worried about removing the product but thankfully Klorane is very easy to brush out with minimal effort. I must admit that I was quite surprised on how well it worked, my hair smelled better, my scalp was less oily and my hair looked fluffier. Success! This is the perfect solution for people that do not want to wash their hair and heat style it (blow dry, curling iron, flat iron etc).

One thing that I did notice was that when shaking the bottle the product leaks out. I accidentally dropped the bottle and I noticed that some of the powder came out, I picked it up and shook it and a lot more powder came out. I would be concerned about traveling with this product and getting it on my clothes – so I would be sure to place it in a baggie for travel. Otherwise the product works well and is a godsend to those that have time constraints, are bed ridden or for those simply looking for an alternative to washing and drying their hair.

Klorane is available at Sephora and Beauty.com for $18

In a previous post I discussed how Pantene has changed their look and their formula to create customized solutions for various hair care needs. I’d always liked Pantene because it smelled great and it left my hair clean, soft and smooth. I wasn’t sure how they could improve on the scent but they did, the new formula smells even better! My hair happens to fit the Medium-thick and color treated models so I have used products from those lines. For someone like me who happens to have dry, thick and color treated hair I need to use a rich conditioner as well as a deep conditioner on my hair on a weekly basis. After a recent trip to the gym I decided to give their Medium-thick Damage Repair Ampoules a shot and see what they could do for my hair. I used the ampoule not only as my deep conditioner but as the only conditioner that I was going to apply to my hair that day.

This damage repair formula comes in a 5 pack of single use ampoules. After washing your hair simply apply one ampoule, work it in thoroughly to the ends of your hair (I used a wide tooth comb), and leave it in for five minutes. The ampoule (pictured above) is a pretty small container (.34 oz) so I had hoped that it was enough to condition my hair and it was (if your hair is longer than your shoulders you may need 2 ampoules). I let my hair air dry and gave it a touch and it was silky smooth, much less frizzy. I would recommend this conditioner because I have extremely dry hair and after using the damage repair formula (without applying any other conditioner) there was a noticeable difference in the appearance of my hair; it was much softer, shinier and less frizzy.

Harry Josh, John Frieda International Creative Consultant gives us the beauty breakdown on Rose Byrne’s Emmy look:

Harry prepped Rose’s hair for one week before the red carpet by prescribing John Frieda’s Root Awakening Health Infusing Shampoo & Conditioner.

HOW TO GET ROSE’S EMMY LOOK:

· Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse was applied to Rose’s wet hair and then blown out using a boar-bristle brush. The mousse helped Harry achieve high volume hair that would easily mold into the curls he was about to create—and the product gave a great texturized base, which Harry needed to create the look.

· Harry used a 3/4-inch curling iron throughout her hair and pulled a portion of the curls into a ponytail at the crown of her head. He then pulled her hair into a high bun, pulling out individual curls for a Grecian-inspired style with a modern twist.

· Harry secured the style by spraying Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray to maintain volume and hold.

Products used: John Frieda Root Awakening Shampoo & Conditioner ($6.49 each); John Frieda Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray ($6.49); John Frieda Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse ($6.49)

Buddha Balm has concocted a sweet treat for your lips! These deliciously flavored and scented lip balms are soy-based, petroleum, preservative and paraben free. Buddha Balm comes in four Flavors: Lychee Pomegranate, Burnt Sugar Fig, Mandarin Orange Ginger and Crushed Mint Apple. These lip balms have moisturizing ingredients such as Coconut Oil, Soybean oil, Vitamin E and Beeswax to keep you lips soft and protected.

I tried all four flavors but I would have to say that the Lychee Pomegranate was my favorite. The fruity taste was not overwhelming and kept my lips smooth and supple all day long. The texture is creamy and easily glides across the lips. These lip balms can be purchased for $4 at Kitson, Ricky’s NYC and buddhabalm.com.

Life is all about enjoying the little things. I apply this philosophy to my life in all aspects and my beauty routine is no different. I’ve mentioned a time or twenty that I have very oily skin so I keep that in mind whenever I buy products for my face. So as you can imagine blotting sheets and I are BFFs. Blotting sheets remove that excess oil that pops up during the day that can ruin an otherwise flawless makeup application. I’ve tried several brands of blotting sheets but some of them contain ingredients like mineral oil which is not good for the skin. Yuck! Well that was before I cam across Boscia Green Tea Blotting Linens. Ahhhhh….Nirvana.

These blotting linens have been my saving grace for a shiny face! It’s pretty amazing that one little product can really improve your appearance in such a big way and that’s why I carry them in my makeup bag. Boscia offers a variety of scent infused linens for your blotting needs. Should you desire something with no scent you can opt for the “Fresh” (essence free) option. If you enjoy a little scent play then you can choose from: Green Tea, Vanilla, Lavender, Rose, California Orange or Peppermint. Boscia Blotting Linens are natural; they’re made from fibers of the Abaca Tree Plant. The best part is that there are no artificial ingredients and the blotting sheet is powder free so no unpleasant powdery residue to be left behind. Yes, these blotting sheets are simple yet effective and that’s why they’re one of my favorite little things. What’s one of your favorite little (beauty) things?

Boscia Green Tea Blotting Linens are $10 for 100 sheets

So last night I decided to try out a few more Dr. Miracles products that I have here at home. You see a few weeks ago I entered a twitter contest to follow Dr. Miracles and I won. Yes, it was quite shocking that I won and I am the proud owner of their new line of products and an Apple iPad. Yes aniPad was part of that contest, yes I know…pretty sweet.

Well today’s lucky product is…

Yes, it’s Dr. Miracles Self Cooling Facial Mask. This is one of the new products that I was dying to try. You see I am a big fan of facial masks because they cleanse deeply and help get rid of trapped dirt and oil. Seriously, who doesn’t love that? So I washed my face, left it wet and applied the mask.

Purty me!

The instructions on the box indicate that the mask should be left on for a minute to dry. A minute? Anyone who has ever used a mask knows that these products can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to dry. So I sat and I waited (and tingled) and waited and after about 15 minutes and my mask was dry. I rinsed my face off and I immediately noticed that my face was dry (dry as in tight) and I quickly applied my Aqua Veil serum to add some moisture. The product states that it “purifies and refines your skin by absorbing the excess oil on your face.” Well it certainly removed the oil from my face but with ingredients like Vitamins C, E, Shea Butter and Soybean Protein I expected my face to be a bit softer.

Overall the product was okay. I liked the tingling sensation on my face but I don’t know that the sensation was the product working or just an ingredient that feels good. The mask did clear away the oil on my skin but I get that same “clean” feeling when using face wash. I don’t know that my skin felt or looked any different than it did prior to applying the mask. So unfortunately I would have to say that the product was mediocre at best. It’s certainly affordable but I don’t know that I will be adding it to my shopping cart anytime soon.

Body Firming
• Bliss FatGirlScrub ($38; blissworld.com)
No scrub will wash away your cellulite, but this one leaves skin “smoother and tighter.” Red algae reduces water retention, Himalayan salt exfoliates, and peppermint extract makes it feel cool and refreshing in the shower.

Lip color
• MAC Cremesheen Glass Lip Gloss ($18; maccosmetics.com)
This gloss is “shiny but somehow not sticky,” said a tester. (The secret is in the formula, a mix of soybean oil and aloe.)

Foundation
• Revlon PhotoReady Makeup SPF 20 ($14; at drugstores)
Photographers know that flattering lighting makes models look gorgeous. This new foundation uses similar logic; it has light-reflecting pigments that create the optical illusion of better skin. It covers pores, redness, and scars, all without caking.

Shampoo and Conditioner
• Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair ($24; aveda.com)
Rich in repairing proteins and hydrating essential oils, this leave-in treatment helps negate any damage from hot tools or UV rays.

Mood-Boosting Fragrance
• Kim Kardashian Eau de Parfum ($35 for 1 oz.; sephora.com)
You’d expect a bold, sultry blend from reality TV star and SHAPE cover model Kim Kardashian, and her new fragrance does not disappoint. It’s a heady mix of florals—like jasmine, tuberose, and gardenia—anchored by earthy jacaranda wood.

Nails
• Best color Essie Nail Polish in Angora Cardi ($8; essie.com)
This deep, dusty rose was the testers’ fave: It felt trendy, but not too ‘out there’ to wear to work.

The complete list of beauty winners can be found in the September issue of SHAPE magazine. Did any of your favorite products make the cut?

Emerging independent designers get to showcase their collections at Nolcha Fashion Week: New York thanks to the mastermind behind this event, Kerry Bannigan. There was a need to fill a void during Fashion Week where globally minded designers could come together to exhibit their collections. Nolcha Fashion Week: New York takes place simultaneously during New York Fashion Week and brings apparel and accessory designers from all over the world including Brazil, Dominican Republic, Sweden, Russia and many other countries. I was able to interview Kerry Bannigan and asked her to share a few behind the scenes details about this amazing event and it’s benefits to the fashion world.

What was your inspiration behind Nolcha Fashion Week: New York?

Listening to fashion designers discuss the need for a cost effective platform to showcase their collections to trade. We wanted to provide this but ensure a professional environment and ability to strengthen a designers brand.

In September 2006 we did runway shows for 6 designers in New York and London. Several seasons on and we have worked with over 160 brands and have introduced the Accessory Exhibition, Ethical Fashion Preview and Beyond the Runway Award.

How has Nolcha Fashion Week changed over the years?

Each season we expand the Nolcha Fashion Week: New York platform including additional opportunities for designers and our sponsors. We have introduced the Accessory Exhibition and the Ethical Fashion Preview; as well as launched the Beyond the Runway Award this season thanks to LooseButton, MSLK, Ernst & Young, Orrick and Studio Light.

Our support from sponsors grows each year and it is thanks to these companies, such as NY Post, DonQ Rum, Riazul Tequila, Gibellieri Shoes and Marcel at the Gramercy Hotel, that we can offer affordable options for the independent fashion market.

What do you know now that you didn’t know the first season?

That no matter how precisely you plan or how organized you think you are something will always happen last minute, especially when dealing with so many creative personalities. You learn to find a fast solution then laugh.

How can this event benefit the fashion world?

Nolcha Fashion Week: New York provides a select showcase of independent fashion designers who are seeking to grow their brand in the USA market. The event supports the fashion designer with a turn-key solution; while providing a convenient destination for media, retailers, stylists, show rooms and other industry executives to attend and connect with relevant contacts to conduct business. We introduce a lot of brands to New York and therefore give our guests the advantage of working with cutting edge brands.

What was the greatest compliment that you received about this event?

We receive many compliments about the event but for me the biggest compliments are in the actions of our returning sponsors, designers and industry support.

What can viewers look forward to at this years show?

This season we have introduced the Ethical Collective runway show in association with Bel Esprit showcasing sustainable brands Elena Garcia, Tammam, Miksani and Nicole Bridger among others.

We will be debut an interesting selection of designers including Hepsen Uzcan, N Kwon, Stella Simona and Narciss.

Which designer would you say is the “one to watch”?

Dora Abodi continues to intrigue me and I think the industry will be impressed, once again, by her latest collection.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with my readers?

There is the chance to work with our Style Director, Gabrielle Teare, backstage for a runway show. Visit www.facebook.com/nolcha

Nolcha is a leading business platform for independent fashion designers and retailers via educational, online and event resources; making business easy for the fashion minded. The Nolcha platform includes Global Fashion Brands, a fashion brand placement resource connecting retailers, stylists and media to independent fashion designers; Fashion Entrepreneur Report, daily How To fashion business videos; Nolcha Fashion Week: New York, currently held during New York Fashion Week providing key exposure to press, buyers, and industry figures for independent fashion designers from all over the world to break into the New York fashion market, in both apparel and accessories; events during London Fashion Week and Independent Retail Week in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco, an initiative to drive business and increase revenue for independent fashion retailers.

Have you ever wanted to wear a lipstick but missed the high gloss of a lip gloss? Do you long for bold color without sacrificing the shine? Well if so the Korres has the answer for you! Korres has a brand new lip line called Raspberry Liquid Lipstick and here’s how it works:

Long-lasting Lipstick Color + Wet Lip Gloss Shine + Natural Formula = KORRES RASPBERRY LIQUID LIPSTICK

This new formula is water based and has two key ingredients: Raspberry and Pomegranate extracts. These extracts provide antioxidant protection. Let’s take a look at the available shades: Berry, Fuschia, Natural, Nude Beige, Red and Soft Pink (swatches below).

Berry

Fuschia

Natural

Nude Beige

I’m looking forward to this new lipstick because it satisfies my need for my daily super shiny lip gloss while still giving me the color that I need. The best part is that it’s natural and full or nourishing ingredients to keep my lips super soft. Have you given Korres Liquid Lipsticks a try?

Over the years I have gone through so many changes with my hair. I’ve cut it, dyed it, gone natural, gone back to straight and everything in between so my hair has been through quite a bit. With my hectic schedule sometimes I take short cuts especially when I’m tired from the day to day grind of my career, going to the gym, taking care of my family and all the other little things that life throws my way. Don’t get me wrong I love my life but it can get a bit messy at times. Some mornings I can pull it together and some mornings I wake up like this:

On mornings like this (see above) I blow dry and/or curl my hair with heat appliances. Yes of course this is very bad and yes it can dry out your hair but sometimes it’s just one of those mornings. With that being said I have to make sure that I deep condition my hair weekly and moisturize my hair on a daily basis. Most recently I have been using Moroccan Oil but I’m always willing to try a new product because hey you never know if something better is out there.

I tried Dr. Miracles Follicle Healing Hydrating Oil, this is a part of the new Follicle Healer line. If you haven’t heard, this new line promises a more pleasant scent and more nourishing ingredients. Out of the 4 new products in this line, I would say that this one is my favorite. The ends of my hair can get dry from the heat appliances that I use so I need to use a daily moisturizer to keep them soft and most of all tamed! When I first tried the hydrating oil I noticed that there was an improved scent, it’s definitely less medicinal than before. I liked that the product contains tea tree oil, shea butter, soy protein and jojoba, these ingredients are great for softening hair. The instructions read that the oil should be used daily and massaged into the scalp for 30-60 seconds. It’s believed that regular massage of the scalp helps improve circulation and stimulate hair growth so this is good practice. I used the oil for about a week, massaging my scalp (yes the tingling sensation is still there!) and applying the oil to my ends. My ends are looking much better, they’re not as frizzy and they do not look or feel dry. The best part about the product is that it costs $4.99 for a 2oz bottle with a dropper applicator. This is a very good fit if you’re a budgetnista looking for a moisturizing oil for your hair.
